In cooperation with the Strahov Brewery, we supplied a pure poppy seed variety from a member of the Czech Blue Poppy association. Thanks to the brewmaster’s mastery, a unique poppy seed beer was created from this collaboration.
Makovec – Limited Edition 17° (7% ABV), Bock
The third annual collaboration between the Zichovec and Strahov breweries follows up on the previous dessert specials, Germknödel with plum jam and Germknödel with blueberries.
This year, the brewers were inspired by the Austrian dessert Mohnkuchen – a poppy seed cake with lime icing. It is a stronger, sweeter 17° Bock that combines:
- a distinct poppy seed flavor obtained from roasted, freshly ground poppy seeds,
- notes of lime reminiscent of a fresh icing on a poppy seed cake,
- subtle vanilla undertones creating the impression of a dessert,
- a smooth body and a slightly higher sweetness typical of strong specialty beers.
This year, we used the Czech blue poppy of the MS Harlekýn variety from the Mark family farm near Znojmo, which gave the beer a clean, distinct poppy aroma. The result is a fragrant, sweeter, yet balanced beer with the character of a poppy seed cake with a lime glaze. The perfect winter dessert in liquid form.
